Would giving webmasters more control in Adsense generate more revenue?

Postby TheHallster7873 » Fri Jan 23, 2009 11:28 am

Assume Google gave websmasters more control in determining the exact ads which appear on a website, rather than automatically placing ads based on content.Would this generate more revenue for the website publisher and advertiser?

I think you may be referring to the competitive ad filter. You will find it in your adsense account. A lot of ads served by G are usually from mfa sites that bid very low on a keyword. Once you have added these mfa sites to your filter then you should see a marked increase in your cpc. Remember a site that gets one hundred visitors a day does not get served the same quality of ads then a one million sites a month site would. Mainly low sites get the crumbs. So in answer to your question you do have the control to get the exact ads you want and generate more revenue.

Would giving webmasters more control in Adsense generate more revenue?

Since Adsense started in 2003, publishers have been clamoring for a way to control the ads shown on their site. One common request found in Adsense forums is a feature such as a way to set a minimum pay per click amount -- e.g. publishers can opt to reject ads that are below 0.50

Google has never agreed, so we will never really know what the impact is for revenues if publishers are given more control.

The problem with giving publishers control is that the whole Adwords is a bidding process -- and some topics get top bids while some gets very little pay per click bids. If you are in a space where the bidding is extremely low, then if you set a parameter such as no ads shown below $1 per click, it may result in your site not showing any ads at all.

Google Adsense has always maintained that they will only show the best paying ads on your site. Unless they change it -- which I dont forsee -- I doubt if they will ever give in to publishers having more control over the ads shown.

I'm always for increasing revenues, of course, but am not sure if going the way of giving publishers more control will do it. My site contains multiple topics, and if more control means manually choosing the ads, I won't have time for it.
