What should I do after I redirect from an old domain name to a new domain name?

Postby JohnR » Thu Apr 02, 2009 4:33 am

About 2 weeks ago, I changed the domain name of my website to a new domain name using the redirect 301 feature in my hosting service (HostMonster), figuring the new domain had more broader appeal as far as SEO purposes (included losangeles instead of smaller city montebello). I am still keeping my old domain as I have been told that linking domains (through redirect 301) to your main domain helps the SEO.

Now my question is should I keep the content intact in the old domain or should I empty the files?. Already Google Webmaster Tools is detecting errors in the old domain, mostly url not found and redirect error when it crawls the old domain (although the old domain automatically redirects entirely to the new domain). Is this normal and should I leave the old domain as is or should I empty contents??

My new domain is progressing OK as far as Google Webmaster Tools is concerned, although not as fast as the old domain when I first hosted it (only a couple of weeks prior to hosting the second and now my actual domain to my website).

Please give me your insight.

I think 301 redirect take page by page. If you have 100 pages with old domain then the search engine have to crawl all those 100 pages and redirect it to the new domain pages. Since search don't do this in one time go so I guess you need to keep that old domain pages until you have seen all new domain pages have been indexed.
