Is advertising the most important factor affecting consumer decisions?

While your main question is pretty much impossible to answer with 100% certainty I thought I'd give a nice ambiguous answer;
Advertising definitely has an influence on consumer decisions.
While people do hate ads they still remember them and this has an effect. Whether it's subtle, subconscious, good or bad it has an effect.
And while people do take the advice of friends over ads on a lot of maters, what has influenced that friend's decision?
